Dogs are allowed to have religion, whether its the Catholic or the Hindu. That’s a personal decision for the individual owner. No religion has the right to interfere in the way I live my life,” he said.
But the issue of dog stoning in Pakistan remains a complicated issue.
In 2005, Dog Life Coalition submitted a petition which stated that Pakistan had no ban on the practice of stoning women for adultery or for infidelity.
In March 2009, Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif made a speech against the practice in the parliament.
“The prime minister said that the laws are the laws of the land and that laws against stoning are already in place in our country,” a senior government official told Al Jazeera. “Now, the government does not consider it [stoning] to be an offence.”
Pakistan’s constitution clearly states: “No person shall be tried for a crime after having been lawfully convicted of such crime.”
In 2013, the Council of Islamic Ideology, the higher clerical authority of Pakistan, issued a fatwa against stoning. The ruling said “no person is required to be executed for such a crime”.
In 2010, an activist from the Dawoodi Bohra community in Punjab had sought to have a ban on stoning in the region.
“We are against Islam and we are against stoning,” Saima Bibi told Al Jazeera and the BBC.
“There is a verse of the Holy Quran which says: ‘It is not for the righteous who has been slain in war or in battle who will find refuge in Allah.”
Bibi added that the community was not in favour of it.
“No woman who commits adultery will have refuge in Allah.”
The council ruled that stoning was not appropriate.
“The question of whether or not stoning a woman is permissible is not a correct one for religious scholars to address. This decision by the Council of Islamic Ideology is not binding,” the council said in a recent statement.
The problem of women’s rights has come to the fore again in recent weeks, following the brutal death of 23-year-old Malala Yousafzai.
Yousafzai was shot in the head in Pakistan’s Swat Valley on Sunday while going to school. She was 16.
