The “new” version of the Windows XP operating system isn’t nearly as robust or as stable as the original operating system.

Microsoft’s second-version operating system is no longer supported, so it’s time to update your PC. The problem is, that update won’t bring you a smooth and reliable transition.

The good news is, there are several free Windows 7 and 8.1 updates to keep your computer running at its best.

The bad news, however? These latest versions may not work in the new Windows 7 and 8.1, so don’t expect that your computer is ready to go back to the old and unstable Windows XP in the near future.

Microsoft introduced the new operating system earlier this year in August, and it was a huge leap forward from the previous version of Windows, which was a bit stodgy and buggy even by Microsoft standards.

But even though Windows 10 started its public beta test earlier this month (the first time that Microsoft created new software versions as open beta), its first public release was postponed until January.

Microsoft’s plans for the rest of 2017 will not be unveiled until then. In the meantime, Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 users can check their OS version by using Windows Update. You even have to use the update if you’ve upgraded to Windows 10. As long as you’re one of the first Windows users on Windows 12 or Windows 10 Mobile (i.e. someone using the newest version of Windows 7 — they haven’t changed the OS version yet), you’ll most likely see an update within your Microsoft account.

While it may be possible to upgrade to the latest version of Windows before January, Microsoft doesn’t recommend that you do so.

“The upgrade from Windows XP to Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 will not take place before January 31,” a Microsoft spokesperson told TechNewsWorld.
