In the last months of the Obama administration, as tensions with North Korea continued to boil over, President Donald Trump was under mounting pressure to do something to curb Iran’s nuclear program. It was during an Oval Office meeting with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe that Trump announced he would not re-emphasize economic sanctions on Tehran.
Abe pushed back in an email to reporters: “There is no change for us. And in fact, the Iran of 2015 is back … [the] main threat now is terrorism, which is not the same as nuclear threat or terrorism [that] the world had imagined.”
The White House didn’t even attempt to hide its surprise when this comment was leaked on a Russian hacking website.
It turns out the U.S. was trying to figure out what to do about Iran’s ballistic missile launches; according to a recent Reuters report, “White House officials have said that President Donald Trump may decide to increase the sanctions that U.S. officials have imposed on Iran in recent months to try to force concessions from Tehran.”
As the Intercept reported in July, “In a secret May meeting between top Obama administration officials and Russian President Vladimir Putin, one proposal on how to limit Iran’s ability to develop a nuclear bomb was rejected outright: The United States was not to stop buying Iranian oil, even as it has imposed economic and diplomatic sanctions on Tehran as retaliation for the ballistic missile tests.”
