In order to succeed in modeling, dogs have been encouraged to be very assertive while being under the control of their human owners.
Here are some tips from other dog modelers:
Don’t try and be a puppy dog . Many of the dogs we take and train are not puppies that are being bred for the role of a model. These dogs are often “trained” to have strong personalities and a desire to please their humans, but often, their owners have not encouraged or even supported them to express that self-confidence by using gentle training and modeling, particularly on a first try. For instance, when we first started out, dogs were “trained” to play in a way that was very friendly and playful, a way of showing their owners that they do not need strict socialization. The way they were able to do that is because we allowed them to be dog owners first. If we had taken them to an animal shelter and made them adoptable dogs, they would have never received the role of being a dog model, because they wouldn’t have had the encouragement that they needed to be able to be that way. The puppies we make do not need to be dog models because we let them be dog owners, so once they are off leash, it is difficult.
