What is the best way to learn to draw? – Drawing Coaching

It’s kind of the obvious answer, but as there are so many people out there who do it differently, sometimes what works for one person might not work for another. So what I’d like to try and get to here is a simple, but very effective framework.

The First Step…

I want to make as much of a commitment to learning as I can right now. I know this is a very vague sentence. But to me this means that first I’m going to use any and every source that exists out there to gain experience with drawing. Not just that, but I’m going to give everything I can learn to anyone who asks for it. Then after that is when I’m going to let go of my own ideas for “the best way” to learn.

So that’s where I’m going to stop. I’ve already done something very short. And I have to take a step back and see what’s really bothering me, what needs to be addressed. So this means that I’m going to go forward. I don’t want to go down the path of reading all of J. K. Rowling’s books.

I think I’m getting better at learning something. I know I have to work hard at my craft. I know my own drawing is bad, and I feel bad about it. It’s something I’ve got to work on for the rest of my life because I know how bad it’s going to get; and I can’t afford to live on it.

The problem is, my work isn’t bad. It’s good. And that’s where the second step comes in.

The Second Step…

Now this can be a daunting thing because my work isn’t “good”. I’m pretty sure I need to read every single one of her books at least once. But I’m not going to do that.

I’m simply going to say that my drawings look like shit.

The reason for this is that my work is not a product. It’s a character drawing. That character’s mind was not made up on the spot. That character was not drawn in a day by the person who made that drawing. Not even close. This person actually has a mind which doesn’t look human.

That’s not an exaggeration. I have a friend from high school who worked as a copy editor for a local bookstore. He was so used to working with people in this mind state that when I went to the store and said I was
