Well, there are no limits — you need a paintbrush, an easel, and the time, patience, and effort to create a drawing in Adobe’s Lightroom, a professional digital photo editor.
But just as important as a canvas must be a palette. And since you’ll need a different coloring palette for each illustration, there are plenty of tools to help guide your efforts.
Below, you’ll find the top 5 coloring services that I’ve tried — and they all work great.
What is Color Splash for you? Color Splash lets you save color options for different illustration types (like illustrations, paintings, or mixed-media arts) that you color, then use them later on in Illustrator, InDesign, or Photoshop.
Color Splash works in a similar way to Adobe Creative Cloud (or Creative Cloud Desktop), where you can create different color palettes to save for different projects. Or you can create an individual document, and save the color choices you want to keep.
Why use color splash? There are more options in the Photoshop and Illustrator color toolboxes, but not many of them are for Illustration or Painting or mixed-media work.
What you need: Paintbrush (optional), pen tool (optional), and a canvas or tablet (optional).
How to use: From the main menu, choose Color Splash from the “Tools” dropdown menu, then hit the Brush button while on the first canvas that you would like a color for.
How it works: The brush uses the painting style you selected to fill the area with a new color, then the palette that’s available at that time. So, if you want to create a black and white piece, you’ll have to type in a black paintbrush as the main brush for color.
A note on color selection: Color Splash looks at both the colors available on your canvas right now and the colors available in the Photoshop and Illustrator color toolboxes. This means that if you want to colorize a piece with another color, you would need to go into a different toolbox and select that color using the Photoshop or Illustrator color palette. (Just like Photoshop and Illustrator’s standard palette.)
