1. The ‘do it yourself’ (DIY) style
DIY style is a general term that describes someone that just wants to develop their own techniques and not try to find out which style can work best for you.
One of the things that DIY coaches will learn the most from their students is the techniques of their opponents. It’s very common for people to ask “how many coaches are available for me?”
As a DIY coach, you don’t want to have to find out.
If you’ve been watching some videos in the past and you like how they’re playing the chess game, you ask your student how many coaches are available for you, and if they can give you the answer they’ll tell you, and you’ve learnt the techniques of the opponent.
On the other hand, when you work with a DIY coach, you’ll learn the techniques of the opponent, then use them to help you train your own technique.
It’s also a common feeling when working with a DIY coach that they use very little technique in their games. You’re either having a great game or a bad game, so often you get to hear about your opponent just being too good at something, or a particular move that worked really nicely during that game and you’re like “oh my god what should I be doing?”
This isn’t something you want to have to deal with when you’re working with your students – because of that you want to learn about the opponent’s skills, not their techniques.
2. The ‘strategy’ style
Strategy styles are also known as ‘tactical’ or ‘coaching styles.’
This type of coach focuses on finding a way to apply a single approach or method of technique to a particular game situation.
For example, one of our students used to talk in class about his idea for teaching chess skills to the kids, but he wanted to apply it to a real-life situation where he wanted to work on something very specific.
The way he came up with that idea was that he thought that a student should have a very basic understanding of chess, but should have very strong thinking and tactical and strategic skills as well. This is why it’s important to keep this idea in the back of your head from the moment you’re teaching something.
Strategists have been around since chess was a game, like Aristotle, who wrote very long treatises on the subject.
