I’ve written more extensively on the distinction between therapy and life coach but don’t find it as simple.
It is very much like other services offered to help a person who is depressed or with a mental anxiety disorder: we are providing support or advice. It’s a very different and often expensive way of looking at the issues that affect you. A therapist can help you to understand why you feel the way you do, but in no other way does it “cure” anything or change any behavior.
Are life coaches different from counselors or other mental health professionals? Do they help more than traditional therapists?
I will say that life coaches are a different service from therapy, but not to the benefit of the depressed and anxious individual. Life coach programs are often aimed at the younger person. I’ve personally noticed that some of the older, more experienced counselors have become a bit more rigid, demanding, and demanding. I don’t think those things represent a positive benefit for the therapist. We want to provide the individual with the information he or she needs to make informed decisions that will help them achieve their desired outcomes.
In a nutshell, a life coach isn’t a mental health professional. They don’t provide health services.
Have you found life coaches successful in changing a person’s outlook for the better? What are your main lessons?
I’ve personally found life coaches to be a huge success when they’ve been successful in changing lives. A life coach can help make sense of a depressed or anxious person’s feelings. They can teach a person to cope. They can help the person to feel as though the person doesn’t need to be “sick” – this in turn will help to change the underlying reasons for these behaviors.
A life coach can also help someone stay focused. They can encourage work, education, and activity that can help to improve your quality of life. I’ve experienced this myself. I started living my life on my own, with a lot more flexibility. That worked well for me, and I’m still living it right now!
I have also experienced life coaches to be a huge part of helping people understand that depression isn’t something that’s a personal “disorder” – for me it was a personal “disease.”
