The Washington Capitals are expected to announce the signing of forward Dmitry Orlov on Tuesday. Orlov is an unrestricted free agent after finishing the season with the Pittsburgh Penguins. Orlov has had a very successful career with the Penguins, winning the William M. Jennings Trophy as a rookie in 2009-10 and winning it one season later. His offensive numbers for the Penguins are up over the year before, and his offensive production for the Capitals was down.
The 27-year-old Orlov was also a successful playoff performer for the Penguins throughout the 2010-11 campaign, scoring eight points (one goal and six assists) in nine playoff games. On Nov. 1, 2011, Orlov scored two goals and one assist in a 4-3 overtime win over the New Jersey Devils in Game 1 of the first round of the playoffs. Orlov scored the winner with 8:55 remaining in regulation in that game.
He also skated in the postseason for Pittsburgh in 2011-12, adding three points (one goal and three assists) in nine games. Orlov posted nine points (one goal and seven assists) in 23 playoff games for Washington in its 2011 Stanley Cup championship squad.
The 6-foot, 205-pound forward has also been an effective possession and penalty kill forward for the Capitals over the last four seasons. He was a minus-6 for Washington last season, and his plus-minus was +2 at even strength and +5 on the penalty kill. It had been a career year for him last season with the Penguins, and he posted career highs in ice time, points and shots. He has one season remaining on an entry-level contract (2012-13).
He also spent time in the AHL in 2013-14 and 2014-15, and he has played for Russian national teams in 2011-12, 2013-14 and 2014-15.
