(Reuters) – The family and friends of a former University of Southern California football player, who was killed in a motorcycle crash after a high speed police chase, have filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the Los Angeles Police Department, the family’s attorney said.

Thomas A. “Trent” Harris Jr., 24, was struck by a marked LAPD motorcycle during a pursuit of a driver who was wanted on a parole violation in 2007 in the death of a UC Davis student and friend. He died early on January 27 on the way to a hospital.
Harris was unarmed at the time, and the Los Angeles police department disputed Harris’ account that he was struck by a motorcyclist. The suit, filed on Friday in Los Angeles Superior Court, seeks unspecified damages from the LAPD and the city’s two top police officials, Chief Charlie Beck and City Attorney Carmen Trutanich.
“We just don’t think they did enough, there was too much negligence and we simply believe that the officers who were involved in doing this, that were involved in making these decisions, should be held liable for the wrongful death of the victim,” said attorney Eric Grew, who represents Harris’ family.
Beck did not comment on the case. Trutanich said she could not comment at this time.
Harris’ uncle, Michael Harris Sr., declined comment. The suit also names Beck as a co-defendant.
Harris’ family said in a statement he was an avid motorcyclist and spent most of his vacation time by himself.
“We are devastated by the loss of our son, brother and friend,” the family said in the statement. “His loss was devastating to us all.”
