One of the most popular questions in the first six months of 2016 was, “Can you be a socialist?”, not what is the meaning of socialism if anyone could be a socialist. The short answer is: “A socialist is anyone who believes that the government should redistribute wealth to everyone, regardless of their means, whether that means, for example, that a minimum monthly income should be provided for all citizens or that a guaranteed minimum income should be provided to everyone regardless of their jobs. The answer of “yes” implies that one believes that in order for society to work, a redistribution of wealth has to take place.” However, the socialist definition has been changed over time. As of June of this year, the current definition has it that you can only be a socialist if you believe that the government should redistribute wealth to everyone.
With this in mind it becomes clear that most of us do believe in something, even if it isn’t socialism. This is the case even if the definition changes. In this article I’m going to discuss some recent news stories about the meaning of socialism and whether or not you can still be a socialist.
The definition of socialism is still one of the most controversial questions from the left for a lot of political purposes. Is it socialism to believe that our government should redistribute wealth to everyone, regardless of their means? Or is it socialism to believe that our government should not redistribute wealth to anyone, regardless of their means of obtaining it?
