As the country gears up for the Summer Olympics in Rio, two big questions remain unanswered. The biggest is how many athletes there will be, and how many will come to Rio over the summer. It’s widely believed that the best hopes for an Olympics are in South America, but there is no shortage of athletes, from Russia to Egypt to South Korea, on the planet.
But how many countries is it really possible to accommodate? There were only two spots for nations of 100,000 people or more; and one spot for a nation with the highest population density in the world — Brazil. That, along with one spot for a country with the world’s highest per capita GDP — Venezuela — left most countries in the lead.
At this point, it appears unlikely that more than 24 countries are going to represent all four Olympic sports: men’s sailing, men’s rowing, women’s cycling, women’s volleyball, women’s fencing and women’s badminton.
Some of these countries are already in Brazil, while others are still considering joining.
With their country set to host the Olympics in Rio, here are the three major ways each nation is competing in the games:
