Who was the first flapper? – 20S Flapper Dresses Cheap

Flappers were very popular up until the late 1940s and early ’50s. In the 1940s they were called the “American-Style Girl.” They were usually from lower class women from New York City’s East Village.

In the 1950s they were mostly a part of a flapper-themed scene.

By the early 1960s they were the girls who appeared in the films of director Robert Altman.

The flapper of today has grown up and the clothes and makeup are much nicer than they were in the past.

There is a lot of controversy about what flappers were wearing back in the 1960s and which ones were actually popular.

Here’s a quote from an article in the Wall Street Journal on May 19, 1960:

The American Woman’s Society said its membership has “lost almost the whole of its flapper-esque air” in the last few months… “In the 1970s, it was a different story. These days [they are “very chic”], and there’s quite a buzz about them,” said Gisela Golliver, chairman of the society.

There’s a difference between hipster and flapper back in the day.

By 1924, it was clear that flappers weren’t going to become very popular with men any time soon. They looked rather silly in a “cougar” or “wannabe-glamour girl” sort of way.

Another 1930s flapper:

If you look closely at this photo of a flapper in 1950s and early ’60s, you can see that she has bright purple dye on her skin and her lips are a shade of red. Some people even say flappers were in fact in the process of a comeback in the 1940s!
